CHAOSMOSIS is a neologism that I coined in 1986/87 while teaching natural science/ecology to grade schoolers and studying Dyanmic Systems and Evolutionary Theory on Cape Cod, Massachusetts...CHAOS (stable but non-linear behavior) + OSMOSIS (fluid concentration equilibrium via movement across a semi-permeable membrane)...I defined the word thus: The osmotic-like absorption/integration of chaotic behavior and flux, given a similar (dynamic/variable) environment. However, in my thinking and writing, I came to apply the term to both physical and psychological 'structures' and behaviors. Essentially, chaosmosis is an adaptive strategy, both physical and mental, given an environment of continuous flux. In 1992, my last notebook (completed) of developed thinking and ruminations on this idea was lost on a train into Boston. It was never returned to me. I mark that day as the official dissemination of my 'conceptual baby', and, from time to time, I would ponder as to its fate, all alone out there, in the harsh world of strange ideas. -- M.R. (see the essay: The Other Chaosmosis on my essay page)
